The first categorization to establish in our exploration of human excellence is that of the three spheres: The physical, the mental, and the emotional/spiritual. One could call them aspects or realms I suppose, but I like the visual of the geometric shape. It is also poetic that it is the same shape as our planet.
This categorization is valuable because it is clear that humans need health in all three worlds to thrive. Certain human attributes fit so clearly in one sphere only, while others straddle two or all three. Some activities affect energy in all, while others stimulate one specifically.
Let’s start to look at these three spheres and what attributes live within each.
The Physical sphere:
This is the foundation, the animal in us. This is where we receive our raw energy in the form of food and water. This is basic human functioning, and the main source of health or disease.
The strictly physical attributes which have an effect on us are the same things doctors will check on a regular basis, such as weight/height, blood pressure, cholesterol and various physical ailments. Habits which affect the physical sphere are things like: diet, exercise and sleep. By just looking at these vital attributes, a doctor can make a good assessment of a persons physical health. You physical well-being is obviously mostly affected by factors in this sphere.
The level of health in the physical sphere can greatly affect the mental and emotional spheres. If you feel physically ill, your mental state will most likely suffer and you will be emotionally drained.
The Mental sphere:
This is the human sphere. This is where powerful attributes such as confidence, communication skills and humor live. This is also the obvious sphere of mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. The mental sphere contains the most attributes which have a direct effect on ones ability to excel in modern life.
The level of health in the mental sphere can greatly affect the physical and emotional spheres. If you are mentally ill, you may have powerful physical symptoms, and you are by definition emotionally ill as well.
The Emotional/ Spiritual sphere
This is the super-human sphere. This is the sphere of love, tolerance and generosity. This is the sphere which connects us to other humans and help us create important relationships. This sphere contains the most attributes which contribute to our happiness.
The level of health in the emotional sphere can greatly affect the other spheres. If you have a lot of love in your life for instance, your mental and physical health will benefit.

( Those who are familiar with M. Seligman’s Character Strengths and Virtues will notice that most of them are represented here. I have deliberately renamed and reorganized them. I will be reviewing some of Seligman’s books at a later date )
You probably figured out that the colored attributes are so to indicate membership of more than one sphere. By analyzing the attributes in the secondary and tertiary color areas, we can find valuable insight into the formula for happiness, fulfillment and success.
